  • Biking Map: The State of Delaware has a great map of bike routes in Sussex and Kent Counties (2.1 MB). Try the Bethany-Fenwick Chamber of Commerce (on Route 1 just north of Fenwick Island) for paper copies.

  • WARNING: DelMarVa roads are generally bike-friendly, but for a stretch of southbound Route 1 north of Rehoboth (by the outlets) bikes share the lane with (sometimes) fast-moving traffic for about 2 miles -- please be careful.  And always wear a helmet!

  • The Junction and Breakwater Trail: A 3.6 mile rail-to-trail crushed stone path between Lewes and Rehoboth.  They stopped short of connecting Lewes and Rehoboth, which would offer an alternative to Route 1 -- (info) -- (map).

Bike Shops

  • Bethany Cycle and Fitness: (302 537-9982) -- out Route 26 near DiFebo's and Isabella's -- bicycles for sale, repairs and rentals too -- also a branch in Rehoboth for when you get a flat tire there -- www.bethanycycle.com.

  • Ocean Cycles: (302 645-4544) -- smaller shop at the north end of Bethany Beach, and a branch in Lewes, DE, for when you get that flat tire on a trip to Lewes -- www.oceancycles.com.

Loops From the House

  • Gordon's Pond State Park: 30 miles -- north of  Rehoboth -- far end of the parking area has a gravel trail (bike-able) leading to a scenic pond and ocean overlook -- (map) -- (loop).

  • Cape Henlopen State Park: 46 miles -- in Lewes -- beaches, WWII gun turrets and submarine watchtowers. Stop for a sandwich in Lewes, and lunch watching for dolphins near the Great Dune Overlook -- (map) -- (loop).

  • Assateague Island National Seashore: 48 miles -- in Assateague, MD, south of Ocean City, MD -- you have to brave the traffic and stoplights of Ocean City (but there is a bike lane). You might see some of the famous wild ponies -- (info) -- (map) -- (loop).

  • Assawoman Wildlife Refuge: 19 miles -- a sandy, unpaved road continues into the wildlife refuge -- worth the trip but difficult on a thin tire bike -- ideal for birders, and you will pass an observation tower (loop).

  • Kits Hummock: 106 miles -- Horsehoe crab sanctuary -- (loop).

  • Double Dairy Queen Century: 100 miles -- one in Fenwick, one in Lewes -- time it right for breakfast and lunch -- (loop)

  • Milford-Slaughter Beach: 100 miles -- (loop).

  • Bowers Beach: 99 miles -- (loop).

  • Prime Hook Beach: 65 miles -- (loop).

  • Broadkill Beach: 58 miles -- (loop).

  • Cape May, NJ: 52 miles -- via Ferry -- (loop).

  • Rehoboth Back Way: 50 miles -- (loop).

  • Holt's Landing State Park: 24 miles - (loop).
